There are over 600 public drinking fountains with free water here and there in Milano. You can drink, cool off, fill your bottle, water your pets for free.
Locally their most frequent nicknames are:
a) Green Dragons (Draghi Verdi) due to their color and the shape of their tap
b) Little Widows (Vedovelle) due to their eternal crying
As we know the climate is globally getting warmer and warmer and these public fountains are getting more and more important both for citizens, visitors and tourists especially in summer.
You can find at least one of them next to any main attraction (Duomo, Sforza Castle, La Scala Theater, City Life, Porta Nuova and more) of Milano and you may meet them here and there along your walks.
Here is an online map (in Italian) of “green dragons” in Milano.
Historically it looks like the first public fountains were placed since the end of the XIX century and the legend says that the first one with the current shape is the one in Piazza della Scala (placed between 1920 and 1930), the square in front of La Scala Theater.
