Hundreds of people is doing this little good luck every day in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele of Milano, next to the Duomo. Visitors from abroad, visitors from Italy, citizens of Milano themselves.

The origin of this ritual is uncertain. Someone says it was an act of contempt towards the monarchy (or even the football team) that was based in the city of Turin (symbolized by the bull). Someone says it was a “Goliardic” game from the university environment. Someone else says it was about fertility. Perhaps these hypotheses were all true and the goal of the ritual changed across the years.

Whatever that is, for sure this is now considered a good luck ritual and it is a “must do” for every visitor of Milano.

This is how it works, at least the most common way:

  • Enter the galleria and get to its center
  • Find the bull on the floor
  • Place your right foot on the bull’s balls: the heel of your right foot
  • Turn 3 times and keep your eyes closed when doing so…optionally you can also make a wish
  • Good luck!
