Chiacchiere and Tortelli, Carnival time in Milano

Carnival in Italy is celebrated during the month of February. That’s the case in Milano as well although Milano has its own “rite” called Carnevale Ambrosiano.

Whatever is the rite you decide to celebrate, you will find these carnival sweets all around the city:

“Chiacchiere”

A crumbly pastry sprinkled with sugar, often a “chocolate” variant is available as well. Chiacchiere is not a specific milanese tradition. It’s probably coming from ancient Rome, however they are the most popular choice in Milano during Carnival time.

“Tortelli”

A soft “frittella”. Tortello is actually probably coming from an ancient tradition specific of Milano.

Both are largely available all around the city in bakeries, pasticcerie, grocery stores, even big food chains.
